Yellow Fever Vaccination

State-approved yellow fever vaccination center

As a state-approved yellow fever vaccination center, yellow fever vaccinations can be carried out in the practice, after careful advice and indication, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate can be issued as an entry in the international vaccination card.

Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease that occurs in tropical regions of Africa and South America. The disease is often difficult with high mortality and there is no causal treatment.

A safe and highly effective vaccine has been available for the prophylaxis of yellow fever since 1937. It was developed by the South African microbiologist Max Theiler at the Rockefeller Institute, for which he was honored with the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1951. Well over 400 million single doses have now been given and the vaccine is on the WHO list ofEssential Medicines recorded.

In terms of international health regulations of the WHO ( International Health Regulations ) a yellow fever vaccination must be proven for entry or transit through certain countries. A vaccination must be carried out at least 10 days before entry (= time at which immunity is to be assumed) and is generally valid for life.

If vaccination is not possible due to contraindications, an exemption is possible with the issue of a vaccination exemption certificate ( Exemption Certificate ) possible through the state-approved yellow fever vaccination centers. In the vast majority of cases, these are recognized by the countries concerned upon entry, but they are not obliged to recognize them.
